If you've been standing in the parking lot of your local Joann wondering what just happened, you're not alone. The closure of Joann stores across Ohio hit the Columbus sewing and quilting community hard — and a lot of people are now figuring out where to go next.

We want to be genuinely helpful here, not just wave our arms and say "come to us!" So let's talk about what to actually look for when you're shopping for fabric locally — and where Quilt Beginnings fits into that picture.

What to look for in a local fabric shop

Not all fabric stores are the same, and depending on what you sew, the differences matter a lot.

Quilting fabric vs. general fabric Joann carried a wide range of fabric types — quilting cotton, apparel fabric, fleece, home dec, and more. Most independent shops specialize. If you're primarily a quilter, look for a shop that carries fabric from established quilting brands like Moda, Riley Blake, Robert Kaufman, and Andover. These collections are curated specifically for quilting projects and coordinated differently than bolt fabric at a general store.

Knowledgeable staff One of the hardest things to replace about a good fabric store is the person behind the counter who actually sews. They can help you figure out yardage, suggest a complementary print, or tell you whether a particular fabric will work for your project. That's something an online retailer can't replicate.

Classes and community If you're newer to sewing or quilting, a shop that offers classes is worth seeking out. Learning in person with other makers is a completely different experience than watching a YouTube tutorial alone at your cutting table.

What we carry at Quilt Beginnings

We're a quilting and sewing shop at 6591 Sawmill Rd in Dublin, Ohio — and we've been part of the Columbus area maker community for years. Our fabric selection focuses on quilting cotton from major brands including Moda, Riley Blake, Robert Kaufman, and Andover, with new collections arriving regularly.

Beyond fabric, we carry notions, books and patterns, and a full range of sewing machines from BERNINA, Baby Lock, PFAFF, Husqvarna Viking, and bernette. We also offer in-person classes in quilting, sewing, embroidery, and serging year-round.

If Joann was your go-to and you're not sure what comes next, we'd love to have you stop in. Our store hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 10am–5pm, Tuesday 10am–8pm, and Saturday 10am–3pm. Give us a call at (614) 799-2688 if you have questions before making the trip.

The Columbus quilting community is alive and well — it's just finding its new rhythm.
