Knowledge Center / Ask the Experts: What Quilting Looks Best?

Ask Us Banner

You asked and we answered!

The question we put to our experts is:

"I usually do my own machine quilting, some free motion and some using rulers. How do I decide what type of quilting will look best?"

And here is what our experts had to say!

I like to look for inspiration in books. One of my favorites is "Free Motion Quilting Idea Book" by Amanda Murphy. Amanda presents lots of ideas from simple to complex when quilting individual blocks, sashings and borders. For the novice quilter, start with simpler motifs. As your skills and confidence increase, you can add complexity with more detailed quilting.

Taking classes from expert quilters will help you expand your vision and skills. We have Amanda Murphy coming in December, with one of her classes focused on exactly this topic. Be sure to register for one or more of her classes that will be featured in our Fall newsletter!

My favorite part about making a quilt is the actual quilting itself. It can be tricky to know exactly what will make the quilt look best though. I find that quilt patterns that are incredibly complex and intricate tend to lend themselves better to simpler quilting designs while quilt patterns that are simple in nature usually look best with more elaborate and fun quilting designs. Borders and sashing are my favorite places to add that perfect touch to tie your quilt together and finish out your project with a bang! No matter what quilting pattern you choose to put on your quilt, just relax, let loose, and have fun!

Joyce's Answer:

I like to look at other quilts for inspiration. If I love the quilting on another quilt, I can try to mirror it on mine if it fits into the space. I normally don't put a lot of quilting on a highly-patterned fabric, because it's a lot of effort for little effect. Solids or tone-on-tones showcase quilting beautifully. If I don't want the quilting to be the focus of my quilt, I use a lighter-weight thread.

Happy stitching!

Tina's Answer:

I usually do fancy quilting if the quilt has large solid open area's. This is when I might go to an idea book and I have several that I like to use. If the quilt has lots of pattern and the quilting will just disappear I do some sort of basic meandering!

Libby Van Treese's Answer:

My first resource for deciding how to quilt a quilt is Free Motion Quilting Idea Book by Amanda Murphy. It shows so many great ideas for all different kinds of quilt blocks. It is not a ruler work book, although she has one of those out now, it does lend itself to using the rulers to create quilting designs. I also take a picture of the quilt with my phone which gives me a whole quilt perspective. Most quilts tend to tell a story and the quilting is usually being "asked for" by the quilt.

Julie Julie

Julie's Answer:

I'm not a longarm quilter and I too struggle with "how am I going to quilt my quilt". That was until I started using Christine Conner's "Edge to Edge" quilting with my embroidery machine.

There are numerous contemporary and novelty designs to choose from the design packs offered with Edge to Edge quilting. I can always find the perfect design to use on a table runner, baby quilts to full size quilts. And it's a great way to use your embroidery machine!
